Liposuction is a versatile procedure which can be performed in many areas of the body, ridding you of unwanted fat that, despite a healthy diet and regular exercise.
The popular procedure helps provide a slimmer and more sculpted appearance and creates more natural contours. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgeries with 258,558 procedures performed in the U.S. in 2018 with about 90% of patients being women.
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that breaks up and removes excess fat from a specific area of the body to slim down, reshape and improve contours and proportion. Also known as Lipo or Lipoplasty, the procedure removes fat from a donor site and then aspirates fat. Liposuction uses a hollow instrument known as a cannula and a powerful vacuum inserted under the skin to suck up fat before injecting it into a specific area.
Liposuction can change the shape in most areas of the body: abdomen, ankles, arms, back, buttocks, calves, cheeks, chest, double chin, flanks, hips, knees, neck, thighs, and waist. It is often used to contour love handles and excess fat in the abdomen. The most frequently treated areas for women are the arms, flanks, and stomach. liposuction is often performed in conjunction with other procedures.
There are several types of liposuction procedures:
Liposuction is a straightforward procedure performed thousands of times by Dr. Workman. It involves a hollow instrument to make small and inconspicuous incisions. A cannula is inserted through the incision to loosen the excess fat and remove it from the body with a surgical vacuum.
There is a reason why liposuction is one of the most popular procedures today because it can make major changes in your life.
If you are looking to get rid of excess fat in a specific area of your body, you are a good candidate for liposuction as long as you are in good physical shape with a stable weight, ideally BMI less than 30. You should have enough firm, elastic skin in the region of fat excess. It’s important to have realistic expectations of what liposuction can provide you.
It is fine to go for a light walk the day of your procedure since that helps promote healing and reduce the chance of developing blood clots. Depending on your current physical health, you can do light cardio exercises - treadmill and elliptical within a few days. But more strenuous exercises should be put on hold for a couple of weeks.
Chin Liposuction is common with both men and women. This eliminates the small fatty deposits which can be difficult to address with exercise and diet alone. For women, the most treated areas are the abdomen, arms, back, hips, and thighs. For men, the abdomen and the love handles or flanks are the most requested areas.
Depending on the location of your liposuction procedure and your type of work, you may return to working within a couple of days. It is normal to experience some moderate pain and discomfort immediately after your procedure. A compression garment is often worn for up to four weeks.
You can expect to swell during the first couple of weeks and up to several months. Avoid using ibuprofen or any other blood-thinning drugs that can increase the risk of bleeding and swelling. Make sure to get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water as part of your recovery. Some fruits like apples and pineapples are high in bromelain and quercetin, anti-inflammatory food that can decrease swelling.
Moving around or going for a light walk after your procedure will help prevent blood clots from forming in your legs. Light to moderate exercises can be resumed after a few days, but more strenuous exercises should be avoided for at least two weeks.
