Silicone Breast Implants
Serving Vancouver and the Portland, Oregon area
Silicone breast implants are currently an option. In 2005, the FDA gave silicone implants the "OK" for use in routine breast augmentation. This means that any woman can choose silicone breast implants if she desires.
Worldwide, women have overwhelmingly chose silicone over saline when given a choice. We anticipate the same in America. The main advantage of a silicone gel breast implant is a more natural feel and lower chance of both visible and palpable rippling. Silicone gel breast implants are lighter and presumably less likely to droop over time.
Disadvantages of silicone breast implants are greater expense, inability to adjust the size, and a longer scar to avoid damaging the implant during placement. Due to their safer shell, silicone breast implants are often placed subglandular rather than under the muscle.
"Gummy Bear," or cohesive gel, implants are currently not available in America and have not been approved for routine augmentation. The safety of silicone breast implants remains a matter of debate and opinion. Dr. Workman can discuss the pros and cons of silicone breast implants to help you make an informed decision.
