Implant Types

Saline Implants

Saline implants are saline-filled silicone shells. Saline implants are currently the most common type of breast implants used in America to improve symmetry. Saline breast implants are less expensive, require a smaller incision, and can be adjusted to fit your body.
Many people believe that saline breast implants are the safest breast augmentation alternative. If the implants happen to break, your body absorbs the saline. Saline is a naturally occurring substance that presents minimal risk to your body. In fact, patients who are suffering from dehydration are often administered saline.
Saline breast implants are filled after they have been placed in your breast. Once the implant is placed in your breast a tube is inserted and the shell is filled with saline. This requires a smaller incision, which results in less scarring.
Although saline breast implants do not feel as natural as silicone implants, when saline implants are placed under the pectoral muscle, your breast will feel quite natural, especially if you have a moderate amount of natural tissue. If you can feel your ribs under your breast, you will be able to feel your implant.
If you are considering breast augmentation, Dr. Workman would like to meet with you and discuss the benefits of both saline breast implants and silicone breast implants. Call or email us to schedule a consultation.

Silicone Implants

Silicone Implants
In 2005, the FDA gave silicone implants the "OK" for use in routine breast augmentation. This means that any woman over the age of 22 can choose silicone breast implants if she desires.
Worldwide, women have overwhelmingly chose silicone over saline when given a choice. We anticipate the same in America. The main advantage of a silicone gel breast implant is a more natural feel and lower chance of both visible and palpable rippling.
Disadvantages of silicone breast implants are greater expense, inability to adjust the size, and a longer scar to avoid damaging the implant during placement.
The safety of silicone breast implants remains a matter of debate and opinion. Dr. Workman can discuss the pros and cons of silicone breast implants to help you make an informed decision.
