"Closing" is an appropriate word as I believe our trip was in fact an OPENING or beginning of an effort that is going to result in dramatic improvements in local health care. More on that later...
One cannot have a beating heart and be untouched by the immensity of the poverty and struggles in Haiti. What I realized during the trip however was that poverty in Haiti is no different than disease is to a physician. As a physician, one never considers curing every patient of a particular disease, but rather the physician tries to cure every patient they encounter. This is identical to Haiti and we need to focus on treating "OUR PATIENTS" rather than on curing the entire countries disease. By doing everything that we can do for these patients, we can have a meaningful impact.
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE...one patient at a time.
By recruiting more volunteers, over time we can hopefully help eliminate the "disease." My
personal goal is to help organize 30-5 members of medical teams from already planned Haiti Mission Trips. By organizing monthly health care teams that bring much needed medicine and staffing the local medical clinic, we can improve health care and train local providers to provide both clinic and home based health care.
In closing, I would like to leave you with the following line which inspires me and hopefully will inspire you to help make a difference in your world: "Tonight we are young. So lets set the world on fire. We can burn brighter than the sun."
God Bless,
Michael Workmand, MD
