The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast size. Breast augmentation, also referred to as breast implant surgery or breast enlargement surgery, is a common procedure used to correct a number of aesthetic problems women have with their breasts.
The most common reason to undergo breast augmentation surgery is to increase the size of both breasts. Some women may notice that one breast is smaller than the other, and they may chose to have this breast increased for balance. Breast augmentation can reshape and rejuvenate sagging breasts, which are common side effects of pregnancy.
Many women who undergo breast augmentation surgery choose to have the procedure in conjunction with a breast lift. This combination can help improve the breasts appearance by removing tissue that hangs below the fold of the breast and by moving the nipple higher, giving the patient a boost of confidence and self-esteem.
The surgery typically lasts about one hour. During this time, you will be put to sleep and Dr. Workman will make an incision along your bust line. The breast implants are inserted through the incision, and stitches are used to close the incision. Although the incisions will leave scars, Dr. Workman will try to make these scars as inconspicuous as possible. Often, these scars can easily be concealed with regular clothing.
Breast implants may be silicone or saline. Dr. Workman will help you choose the type of implant. He will also help you decide if sub muscular or sub glandular implantation is right for you. During your initial consultation, Dr. Workman will discuss your goals, explain the procedure, and answer any questions you might have.

Cost of Breast Augmentation
Prices for breast implants in the Portland/Vancouver area typically range from $5400 to $6600. Silicone implants cost slightly more than saline. If you wish to combine a breast augmentation with another surgery, such as a breast lift, the cost will average around $9500 for a complete breast lift with implants.
Submuscular vs. Subglandular
If you are considering breast augmentation, you need to understand the difference between submuscular and subglandular implantation. Submuscular implantation refers to the breast implant being placed under the pectoral muscle, while subglandular implants are placed under the breast gland.
Dr. Workman places most saline breast implants under the pectoralis major (chest muscle) rather than placing the implant under the breast gland. There are three reasons for this preference:
- First, placing the breast implant under the muscle helps decrease any evidence of ripples to the eye or touch. The result is a smoother, more natural looking breast. Your breasts will also feel more natural. While a subglandular implant normally will look natural, larger breast implants may appear fake if your tissue is less than one inch thick.
- Secondly, numerous studies have suggested that placement under the muscle slightly lowers the chance of the body forming a firm, hard capsule around the breast implant, which can be painful and can require a second surgery.
- The third reason is that mammograms will be slightly more sensitive. It is estimated that subglandular breast implants make mammograms 10% more difficult to read. This leads to less effective mammograms, which may cause trouble down the road.

Most breast augmentation patients are able to return to work five to seven days following the surgery. Patients can generally resume their exercise schedule after three weeks; however, one should follow the physician's advice carefully to avoid injury or damage to the affected areas.
We recommend wearing a sports bra for support after breast surgery. We will review specific instructions with you at your preoperative and postoperative appointments.
In general, breast augmentation provides very pleasing and gratifying results. Your results will be maximized by careful self-care during your recovery period and by staying in touch with Dr. Workman and his skilled team of professionals.
Breast implants do not impair breast health. Careful review of scientific research conducted by independent groups such as the Institute of Medicine has found no proven link between breast implants and autoimmune or other systemic diseases.
