Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a common surgical procedure many women undergo to either enlarge, re-shape or rejuvenate their breasts. In fact, there were nearly 300,000 breast augmentation procedures in 2016 – a 4% increase over 2015 . That makes breast augmentation easily the most common cosmetic surgical procedure among American women by far.

Why is breast augmentation so common? The most obvious answer is self-image – breast augmentation can have a very positive impact on a person’s self-esteem. It’s not always purely aesthetic, though – women opt to undergo breast augmentation for a variety of reasons, including mastectomy, recent weight loss, breast A-symmetry, post-pregnancy or simply to stave off the effects of aging.

How it Works

In simple terms, breast augmentation is done by surgically placing an implant behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle to enhance or alter the shape. The implant is a sack filled with either saline or silicone. How the implant is placed in the chest varies. Surgery is performed using either general anesthesia or local anesthesia.

There are four different breast augmentation techniques:

  1. Incision underneath the breast – This is the most common method. The surgeon makes a small incision in the natural skin fold underneath the breast and places the implant inside. Factors such as age, weight and if you’ve had children will impact the visibility of scarring.

  2. Incision under the arm – This is similar to the first technique, but the surgeon makes the incision in the under arm and performs the surgery using an endoscope instead. This may be a good option if you’re concerned about scar visibility due to the above-listed factors.

  3. Near the areola – The surgeon will make a small cut near the outside edge of the nipple and place the implant inside using the opening. Some may experience slight loss of sensation near the nipple or problems breastfeeding after this implant technique has been performed.

  4. Near the belly button – You may opt to have the augmentation incision made near the belly button. This technique also involves using an endoscope to insert the implant.

The augmentation technique you choose may affect how much pain you experience after the procedure, the appearance of the breasts, the risk for implant breakage in the future and how future mammograms are performed. A board-certified plastic surgeon can help you decide which technique is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Although breast augmentation is a very common procedure, it’s natural to have some questions for your surgeon beforehand. Here are a few of the most common questions:
  1. What is the most common complication associated with breast augmentation?
As with just about anything else in life, there are potential complications when it comes to breast augmentation. The most common complication is capsular contracture, which refers to painful scar tissue around the implant. However, only 10 percent of breast augmentations are affected .

  2. How long will my implants last?
Breast implants can safely last 10 years or more, depending on many factors like the materials with which the implant was made.

  3. Will augmentation affect future pregnancy?
If you’re planning on family changes after your breast augmentation, you can expect your implants to be stable and safe during pregnancy, breastfeeding and while any other changes to your body occur.

  4. Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?
It depends. In general, women who are physically healthy, have fully developed breasts and who are not currently pregnant are great candidates for breast augmentation. Part of the process involves receiving a consultation from your surgeon, so you will be able to make an educated decision before you go under the knife.

We hear about body image in the media, at school and online almost constantly. The phrase is repeated so often, it almost loses its meaning for many Americans. Although you may not have a firm grasp of the concept of body image, you have probably felt its effects, both positive and negative, without even realizing it. With the holidays quickly approaching and much of the season’s traditions revolving around not-so-healthy foods and drinks, it’s important to recognize your own body image and do what you can to appreciate the skin you’re in.

It takes a lot of dieting and dedicated exercise to lose stubborn excess weight around the stomach. For some individuals, especially those who may have recently lost a lot of weight, intense ab workouts aren’t always enough to tighten loose skin around the stomach. Many people who lose a significant amount of weight often turn to tummy tucks when ab workouts aren’t giving them the body they want.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, formally known as an abdominoplasty, involves the surgical removal of excess abdominal skin, reducing fat while tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. Abdominoplasty is often performed when concentrated exercises designed to tighten the abdominals aren’t enough to tighten the muscles in the stomach or eliminate excess skin from weight loss or pregnancy.

During the surgical procedure, a plastic surgeon makes a horizontal incision just above the pubic area, or above the navel when a patient has loose skin, to ensure the excess skin can be pulled down. The plastic surgeon tightens underlying abdominal muscles using sutures. Liposuction may be used in conjunction to remove excess abdominal fat depending on the patient’s existing body fat.

Tummy tucks yield several benefits, including:

·        High success rates

·        Firmer, flatter abdomen for years to come

·        Relatively short recovery time (about three weeks, depending on the individual)

Tummy tucks aren’t recommended as a weight loss solution. The effects of a tummy tuck can diminish over time with fluctuations in weight or future pregnancies. It’s recommended people who get a tummy tuck resume their workout regimens once healing has finished and for women to postpone the procedure if they are considering having more children in the future to maximize the effect of the procedure.

Our skin can’t always be as beautiful as it was when we were in our 20s. As we grow older, our faces, neck and chest begin to display signs of aging such as wrinkles, uneven skin tone and dryness. Luckily, modern cosmetic advancements and aesthetic treatments have made looking years or even decades younger an attainable possibility. With a comprehensive skin care routine aimed at reducing the appearance of aging, you can reclaim the firm, healthy-looking skin of your youth.

Exfoliation and Cleansing

Though many people enjoy a refreshing facial cleansing in the mornings to wake themselves up, evenings are actually the best time of day to attend to your skin’s needs. Throughout the day, your face, neck and chest collect dirt and toxins from the air and are dried out by the wind and sunlight. By exfoliating and cleansing in the evenings, you can ensure your skin is perfectly clean before it begins its overnight rejuvenating cycle when you go to sleep.

The first step to beautifully smooth skin is exfoliation. This process removes dead skin cells from the top layers of skin and prevents them from collecting inside your pores. This dramatically reduces the prevalence of blemishes and promotes a fresher appearance. However, exfoliating can become harsh on certain skin types. It’s recommended you only exfoliate once or twice per week to prevent irritation or redness. Those who want a more thorough facial exfoliation can seek out chemical peels at their local skin care professional’s office.

If you’re looking for a daily solution to oily skin, cleansing face washes can provide deep cleaning power without the harsh abrasion found in exfoliators.

Once your face is clean as a whistle, it’s time to ensure it locks in all that moisture. Invest in a quality moisturizer for your face, neck and chest to maintain a firm appearance with a more even skin tone. Some skin types may suffer from chronic dryness following a face wash or exfoliation, meriting the use of professional-grade moisturizers.

Every face is different, however, and may require unique moisturizers to achieve the best results.

Sun Protection

Perhaps one of the most important elements of your skin care routine is the consistent application of quality sunscreen. Many of us may have unpleasant memories of seemingly overbearing mothers forcing sunscreen upon us as children. However, daily sunscreen usage can do wonders for your skin as you age. The sun causes more damage than just the occasional sunburn. With repeated UV exposure, your skin begins to develop age spots, uneven tones, wrinkles and more.

Sunscreen prevents UV radiation from permeating your skin, thus reducing the appearance of skin imperfections in the future. Sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 should be applied daily 20 minutes before being exposed to sunlight and re-applied every two hours for best results.

Aging is a normal part of every woman’s life, but it is documented when you are part of a royal family such as Queen Cornelia from War for the Planet of the Apes , in theaters July 14. A woman’s face undergoes many changes as she ages. Stress from work and home life affect the overall appearance of her skin eventually causing wrinkles, fine lines and sagging skin. Genetics and environment also play a role in how she ages and takes on the outside world.

Parental Stress

As women enter the child-bearing years, their bodies and skin take on a new role. Change is inevitable. Most mom’s help their child develop into a new human being, learning to take their place in the world, with little sleep. In addition, there are child illnesses, growing pains and the struggle to communicate properly with a growing mind. Queen Cornelia also had to prepare her young Princes for war, and did all this while under the scrutiny of the public eye.

Environmental and Wartime Factors

Different types of environmental factors also cause effects on the skin. Like us today, Queen Cornelia had to face pollution, sun, heat, and cold. Excessive heat can lead to blisters or heat rash while excessive cold can cause dry skin and dandruff. Pollution, over time, can clog your pores and cause acne or other skin conditions. Queen Cornelia, like our modern-day soldiers, also dealt with the constant threat of lacerations, radiation, burns, smoke damage, and other pollutants expelled from devices of destruction. It’s a tough job being the leader of a planet...errrr home!

Thankfully, we know so much more about skin care today!

Feel Like a Queen with Facial Care from Dr. Michael Workman, M.D.

Unlike Queen Cornelia, you have options! Dr. Michael Workman can renew your skin’s youth and volume with any number of his state-of-the-art skin care procedures and products. People generally assume BOTOX® is one of a few facial rejuvenation injectable treatments, but there are a surprising number of facial rejuvenation injectables on the market – some of which only a few certified doctors and cosmologists are able to administer. The following are just some of the facial injectables and treatments that can treat a variety of facial issues through different, yet similar methods.

Types of Facial Rejuvenation Treatments

·         Belotero Balance® Belotero Balance injectable gel takes a more targeted approach compared with fillers that rebuild facial volume and structure, and specifically treats moderate-to-severe etched-in lines and wrinkles, such as vertical lip lines.

·         BOTOX Utilizing a purified protein known as Botulinum toxin type-A, BOTOX works to relax the underlying facial muscles, preventing the skin from being tugged, pulled and folded by repeated facial expressions. One 10-minute treatment can erase years of worry lines and facial wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.

·         Dysport – Similar to BOTOX, this injection is also comprised of the bacteria that causes botulism. Botulinum toxin blocks nerve activity in the muscles, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity. The tension caused by taut facial muscles is partially responsible for many lines and facial wrinkles. When these muscles relax, the wrinkles and lines fade and in some cases disappear.

·         Epionce® – Epionce fortifies your skin with an Epionce Renewal product, and you can further enhance your results with a complete regimen that includes cleanser treatments and protection products.

·         Juvéderm Voluma® Voluma is a hyaluronic acid-based injectable gel filler designed to restore volume to the cheeks. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in youthful skin and can help significantly improve various signs of aging in gaunt or hollow cheeks and light areas of sagging skin.

·         Latisse™ – A revolutionary new treatment that gradually and remarkably grows and enhances eyelashes. Latisse™ solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow full eyelashes, making them thicker, longer and darker.

·         Restylane – Restylane and the Restylane treatment family are designed to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds with a mid-to-deep injection in facial tissue.

·         Xeomin® – A botulinum toxin-based injectable treatment that is designed to improve the appearance of the vertical frown lines that form between the brows. Xeomin uses the same active ingredient as BOTOX but without other ingredients that aren’t required to treat facial lines and wrinkles.

·         NeoCutis® – NeoCutis medical-grade skin care products are available only through select, certified physicians. NeoCutis is scientifically formulated using MPC™ (micro-protein complex) technology to address common skin concerns such as wrinkles, skin laxity and fine lines.

Breast augmentation, also known as breast implant or enlargement surgery, is a common procedure many women receive to increase the size of one or both breasts to reshape or rejuvenate sagging breasts. The surgical process is fairly quick, but there are some things patients should know about the recovery process and how to take care of implants post op.

Being a mother couldn’t possibly be more fulfilling, but many moms suffer from weight gain and sagging skin brought on by childbirth. This drastic change in body shape can significantly affect your confidence and ability to feel sexy. If you are unhappy with your body shape, it’s time to take back your youthful body with a Mommy Makeover!

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a plastic surgery procedure in which the breasts and stomach are altered to restore the body to its pre-pregnancy shape. Most Mommy Makeovers include a tummy tuck and liposuction to remove excess fat and reshape sagging skin. Many patients also choose to restore their breasts with breast augmentation procedures because pregnancy and nursing can result in increased breast sagging.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

There are only two requirements to be a perfect candidate for a Mommy Makeover. You, first, must be a woman in excellent overall health with no recurring conditions that can be agitated by surgery or anesthesia. The second and most overlooked requirement to receive a Mommy Makeover is the completion of childbearing. If you are unsure if you’d like to have another child in the future, it is best to postpone receiving your Mommy Makeover until after you are positive you will not be having more children. Becoming pregnant following a Mommy Makeover can disrupt the shape created during surgery and undo your figure.

The Surgery

The first thing you’ll need to do to proceed with your Mommy Makeover is schedule a consultation with an American Board Certified Plastic Surgeon to discuss your body goals and how the surgeon can help you achieve them. Following the consultation, you’ll schedule your Mommy Makeover appointment in either one or two stages, depending on the extent of surgery required to achieve your goals.

On the day of your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will proceed to make an incision from hip to hip and tighten the muscles and tissues beneath your navel with sutures. Before the incision is closed, liposuction will be performed to remove excess fat and create a flat and tight stomach.

The Recovery

Following surgery, you will be taken to a recovery area where you will be given time to awaken from anesthesia. Once you are coherent, you’ll be given plenty of care instructions by your surgeon before you’re allowed to go home to rest.

You may be asked to wear an abdominal binder to maintain your body’s new shape, and will be sore and tender for a few days following the surgery. Patients should avoid participating in any strenuous activity or lifting, including exercise. After a few weeks, you may be allowed to resume normal activity. Remember to follow-up with your surgeon in a couple weeks so they may check on your healing.

Recapture Your Youthful Figure

Having children isn’t the end of your slim, pre-pregnancy body! Discover what a Mommy Makeover from American Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Michael Workman, M.D. can do for you. To schedule a consultation, contact us online or call 360-896-6000.

Getting rid of resilient pockets of fat can be difficult, even with the most diligent exercise regimens and diets. However, CoolSculpting has proven its efficacy when it comes to eliminating difficult pockets of fat, allowing for clothes to fit better and to make exercise regimens more effective. CoolSculpting is great for removing the excess fat that might spill over when buttoning pants or fastening a bra, but it’s important to note that CoolSculpting only works when applied correctly.

CoolSculpting’s Effectiveness

While CoolSculpting is an effective method to reduce fat, it’s not meant to be a weight loss solution. CoolSculpting is designed to make only minor improvements. Clients are assessed for their age, skin quality and how thick their skin is to determine if they’re qualified for the procedure and whether they will see positive results.1

CoolSculpting works best on fatty areas of the body; areas of the body with little or thin layers of fat shouldn’t receive CoolSculpting as it will have little effect on those areas, even after several rounds of the procedure. Skin that is too thick can prevent CoolSculpting paddles from accessing the layers of fat underneath, nullifying beneficial effects.

It often takes several rounds of CoolSculpting to achieve visible results, but experts state patients will experience up to a 25% reduction of fat in a treatment area. It’s important to note that the procedure is not designed to shed pounds. Even eliminating a significant number of fat cells adds up to very little when you step on the scale.

The results can be long-lasting but only if patients continue to take steps to control their weight going forward, such as controlling nutrition and maintaining a steady workout regimen. Results generally become visible after four weeks, and skin begins to shrink and smooth in the treated area approximately 12 weeks post-procedure. The procedure is non-invasive and safe but complications can occur such as numbed sensations.

Receive Outstanding Results with Dr. Michael Workman, M.D.’s CoolSculpting Treatment

Receiving guaranteed results depends on which medical professional you choose to perform your CoolSculpting treatment. Dr. Michael Workman, M.D. can provide you with the results you want with the care and attention to detail required in CoolSculpting treatments.

Dr. Workman will apply a controlled cooling wand to the area of fat you want to treat. Fat cells beneath the skin are essentially frozen to death without any harm to the surrounding skin, tissue or muscles. The treatment takes about an hour, allowing you to immediately return to your daily business once completed.

Dr. Workman is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has performed surgeries in the Portland and Vancouver area since 1993. Dr. Workman performed more than 400 successful surgeries and non-invasive procedures for his patients last year, ranging from breast augmentations and tummy tucks to liposuction and CoolSculpting.

Contact Dr. Workman’s office today to find out if you’re a candidate for CoolSculpting and remove troublesome fat that has been resistant to diet and exercise once and for all.
